Motorcycle Training FAQs
Getting Started
Do I need to know how to ride a bicycle first?
We get this one a LOT. Although knowing how to balance on a bicycle can help you feel more confident with two-wheel balance, you do not need to know how to ride a bicycle before you learn to ride a motorcycle or scooter.
Would you recommend an Introduction to Motorcycle (ITM) course?
Yes! If you’re new to riding or feel nervous, an ITM course is a great way to build confidence before your CBT.
Do I need a complete a Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) course to ride a motorcycle?
Yes. In the UK, a CBT certificate is required to ride a motorcycle or scooter up to 125cc with L plates.
Do I need a full UK driving licence to start?
No. A full licence isn’t necessary; a UK provisional driving licence is all you need to take your CBT.
Is a European licence accepted?
Afraid not, we can only accept a UK full or provisional licence.
Booking your ITM or CBT
Do I need a Theory Test to book a ITM or CBT?
No, you do not need to pass a motorcycle theory test to book or complete a CBT. The CBT is a separate training course for new riders.
You will need to pass the motorcycle theory test if you intend to take the practical test and get a full motorcycle license.
Can I do a CBT on a scooter?
Yes! You can complete your CBT on either a motorcycle or a scooter.
How much does a CBT cost?
Our CBT course is £200 for the days training, if you need to come back for further training before we can sign off your CBT certificate, this will be an additional cost.
Why can’t I book a CBT this week?
Due to high demand and instructor availability, same week slots are often unavailable. All our ITM and CBT availability is uploaded onto our booking page. We recommend you follow our social media pages as we sometimes post last-minute availability on them.
How long does a CBT last?
A CBT certificate in the UK is valid for two years. If you don’t pass your full motorcycle test within that time, you’ll need to retake the CBT course to continue riding.
Full licence questions
Can I book a full motorcycle licence course straight after my CBT?
Absolutely! Once you’ve completed your CBT, if you want to take your motorcycle journey to the next stage, one of our instructors will discuss the next steps with you and help you plan your full licence training.
How do I book a motorcycle theory test?
You can book your motorcycle theory test through the official GOV.UK website.
Why are motorcycle tests only available on weekdays?
This is because the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) does not offer weekend test slots unfortunately.
How do test dates work if I fail?
We of course never want this to happen, and we would not put you in for a test unless we feel you’re ready, but sometimes, nerves get the best of us. If you do fail, we will work with you on any additional training where required and / or wait the allotted time and get you booked back in as soon as possible.
- Module 1 (Mod 1) test: If you fail, you must wait a minimum of 3 working days before rebooking.
- Module 2 (Mod 2) test: If you fail, you must a minimum of 10 working days before rebooking.
Training days
Will I pass my CBT in one day?
Most learners complete their CBT in one day, but it’s a training course, not a test. If you need more time to ride safely, your instructor will arrange additional training with you.
Why do I need to provide my National Insurance number?
We need your National Insurance number to carry out licence checks before your road ride.
What do I wear?
Safety gear is essential, we can provide you with a helmet, jacket, and gloves for your training. You must wear:
- Long trousers (preferably jeans)
- Sturdy trainers / boots preferably ones that cover your ankles (we do not recommend steel top capped shoes)
If you have your own gear, please feel free to bring that.
Do I bring my own food/ snacks?
Yes, there will be time during your training for short breaks, and a longer lunch break. We advise you either bring your own lunch/ snacks with you, or there is a McDonalds walking distance.
There is a small fridge where you can purchase soft drinks, including bottled water from, and there is a small tea and coffee making facility.
Accessible and inclusive training
Do I need to speak English?
Yes. Our instructors only speak English, so you must be able to understand and communicate in English for safety reasons.
Can you accommodate riders with hearing impairments?
Yes, we can teach individuals with some hearing impairments. Please let us know in advance so we can make any necessary adjustments to ensure clear communication and safety.
Do you offer training for people with other accessibility needs?
We aim to support all learners where possible. Contact us with details about your requirements so we can discuss how we can help.
I am not very tall; can I still book a CBT?
100%. We have a fleet of motorcycles that accommodate many different body types. So don’t let your height hold you back.
